2024 Acura Models Earn Top Safety Accolades

Three 2024 Acura models have emerged as top choices after a series of tests by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety.

Acura's Integra and MDX earned the IIHS "Top Safety Pick+" accolade, while the RDX SUV received the "Top Safety Pick” honor. The vehicles achieved impressive scores in the grueling side impact test which simulates a faster-speed collision with a bigger barrier.

IIHS's new barrier weighs 4,180 pounds and strikes the test vehicle at 37 mph. It is a significant increase from the previous test which used a 3,300 pound barrier traveling at 31 mph.

"This year's winners are true standouts, offering the highest level of protection for vehicle occupants and vulnerable users,” said IIHS president David Harkey. “We followed the tougher requirements we introduced last year with another major update to the award criteria in 2024."

The 2024 TSP and TSP+ awards criteria reflect the agency’s focus on improved rear seat safety and pedestrian protection systems. A minimum “Acceptable” score in the revised IIHS pedestrian front crash prevention test is mandatory for Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ distinctions.

Another addition is a revamped front overlap test which adds a second dummy behind the driver to assess rear-seat safety in frontal collisions. Vehicles that pass the test earn a "Good" or "Acceptable" rating.

Acura equips its entire lineup with a collision-absorbing body structure designed to deflect force of impact away from passenger compartments. In the event of a crash, cutting-edge restraint systems, including airbags and seatbelts provide an extra layer of assurance for occupants.

The updated TSP requirements prioritize occupant protection in all seating positions and push automakers to strive for higher safety standards.

IIHS is an independent agency dedicated to reducing fatalities, injuries and property damage caused by car crashes through rigorous testing and standards. The organization launched its annual vehicle evaluations for Top Safety Picks in the 2006 model year. It introduced its pinnacle Top Safety Pick+ award in 2013.
