Acura's 2023 Integra, 2023 MDX and 2023 RDX are top choices for vehicle safety, according to testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The three vehicles earned the highest possible "Top Safety Pick+" ratings for their stellar performances in more demanding crash protection appraisals.

The stiffer requirements from IIHA dropped the total number of vehicles from all brands receiving pinnacle recognition. The Acura models made it to an exclusive group of 28 vehicles earning top-tier honors.

"The number of winners is smaller this year because we're challenging automakers to build on the safety gains they've already achieved,” said David Harkey, president of IIHS. “These models are true standouts in both crashworthiness and crash prevention."

Safety Engineering and Technology

All models are equipped with remodeled Advanced Compatibility Engineering bodies and advanced supplemental restraint systems (seatbelts and airbags) to protect passengers in frontal collisions.

A network of sturdy elements also diverts crash energy from the vehicles to reduce the force of impact transferred into the passenger compartment.

AcuraWatch is a collection of sensing safety technology fitted in all Acura sedans and SUVs.

Features include:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Lane Departure Steering Assist
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Traffic Sign Recognition

One significant change to the safety test is replacing the original IIHS side crash test with an updated evaluation. The new test focuses on high-level protection for rear seat occupants and generates 82 percent more crash impact energy than the initial assessment.

Vehicles are still required to earn "Good" ratings in driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front and original moderate overlap front tests.

Roof strength, head restraints and vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention evaluations are no longer part of the appraisal. Another modification is the nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention test.

"Advanced" or “Superior" performances are required in both the nighttime and daytime pedestrian tests for a TSP+ rating. Top-rated vehicles must also receive a "Good" or "Acceptable" rating for standard headlights across all trims.

The Insurance Institute is an independent agency focused on reducing injuries and property damage from motor vehicle crashes.

IIHS began its annual evaluations for Top Safety Pick in the 2006 model year and introduced its Top Safety Pick+ in 2013. Both awards identify the best  choices for safety within vehicle size categories in a given year.
